Week of Sept. 28


Friday
Simulation year: 1861. Collected Discussion Questions. Destiny Dice and Combat consequences/results to be used in tonight's journal entry (results varied by period).

Thursday
Simulation year: 1861.What Would You Do? questions completed and collected. Collected brace maps and Cornell notes from yesterday. Read and discussed Why Did They Fight? handout. Handed out Battles/Camp Life charts (to be filled in as we go).
Homework
Discussion Questions (half-sheet of paper)1 & 4, plus any TWO of #2, 3, 5, 6. In complete sentences on a separate sheet of paper.



Wednesday
Simulation year: 1861. Handed out yellow sheet on Cornell Note-taking Format and pink sheet explaining Thinking Maps. Read and did Cornell Notes as a class on textbook pp. 484-485 (Confederate and Union Strategies, and The Battle of Bull Run).
Homework
As discussed in class.
1. Write questions for each of the uppercase letters in the notes in the left margin. These questions should be answered by what you have in the notes column.
2. Construct one thinking map/mind map for only ONE of the uppercase letters. Put this on the right hand side of the page.
3. Write a summary at the end of your notes in complete sentences.
4. If you are a Yank, create a Brace Map (see pink sheet to help) on Abraham Lincoln; if you are Reb, create one on Jefferson Davis (see w/s).





Tuesday
Simulation year: 1861. Put finishing touches to contingent flags. Took notes during 1861 Interview. Read "Who Fought in the Civil War?" packet. Handed out Glossary.
Homework
Journal Entry #3. Use info from interview, packet reading, and glossary.



Monday
Simulation year: 1861. Checked Journal Entries (be sure to follow guidelines to get full points). Formed contingents and created flags to build esprit de corps.
Homework
Journal Entry #2. Use info from your identity and talk about working in your contingent to create the flag; how hard/easy it was to decide what to add; the new recruits whom you met; pull notes from the Civil War handout.

Friday
Chose roles for Civil War simulation. Discussed expectations and identities.
Homework
Journal Entry #1. Use info from your identity and talk about enlisting and your contingent. Date is shortly after war starts in 1863.



Thursday
Graded yesterday's diagnostic test for 7th grade Social Studies.
Graded and collected Geography and History Activity 13.
Discussed expectations and requirements for the Civil War unit.
Distributed and began reading Civil War packet (keep your copy - I will not be issuing replacements!).
P2 & 3: Read and discussed 5-6 pages of packet.
Homework
P2 & 3: Abolition Arguments w/s - much you will know, some you will have to research (use textboook, Internet, etc.)
P7: w/s 152: The Union is Divided, #1-9. Answer #9 on a separate sheet of paper.



Wednesday
Took (did not grade) a diagnostic test for 7th grade Social Studies.
P2 & 3: Read w/s 151: The Election of 1860. Completed w/s 152: The Union is Divided, #1-9. Finish #9's chart at home if necessary.
P7: Took (did not grade) a diagnostic test for 7th grade Social Studies. Worked on w/s 77: Geography and History Activity 13.
Homework w/s 77: Geography and History Activity 13. Ignore the last sentence of question #4 (it refers to a different textbook).


Tuesday
Collected w/s 26 (and, for P7, the notes to Lincoln's Problems). Read and discussed handout European Reaction to Southern Secession.
Homework Questions 1-13 on the handout. Write complete sentences, leaving a blank line between answers. No need to rewrite the question.




Monday
Shared and collected the journal entries as a slave. Read and discussed handout "Lincoln's Problems," pulling out main ideas. Read Who Started the Civil War w/s 26.

Week of Sept. 14


Friday
Collected responses to John Brown prompt (P2, 3, 7) and notes from article (P7). Watched and took notes on part of Slave Catchers, Slave Resisters [from the History Channel].
Homework Write a journal (diary) entry as a runaway slave, drawing on your notes from the video. Include a minimum of five facts from the video, and highlight them. If you don't have a highlighter, draw a box (rectangle) around the words/phrase/fact. If you choose to draw the box, please leave every other line free in your journal entry.



Thursday
Constitution Day w/s
P2 & 3: Read and discussed The Story of John Brown.
P7: Students read and took notes on The Story of John Brown.
Homework Respond to the following prompt in a good paragraph (min. 5-8 sentences): Was John Brown justified in what he did? Why or why not? (This would be your opinion, from what you have learned.)



Wednesday
Early Release - special schedule.
Graded Friday's Vocab/Content Ch 11-15 S1 Quiz and the packet completed in class yesterday.
Homework None


Tuesday
Collected the summary/reflection from Monday's video. Students answered questions on Section 21 packet on the events leading up to the Civil War - these were turned in.
Homework Enrichment Activity 13-3 w/s: The Decade that Cotton became King


Monday
Students who were absent Friday took the test today. Checked HW - notes on Ch15 S3, Communicating in Code w/s, Review Ques. 7 & 8 p. 476.
Students took notes as we watched part of the History Channel video "Slave Catchers, Slave Resisters."
Homework Using the notes, write a summary of the video, leave a line free, and then write a reflection piece (your thoughts, feelings, on what you saw) - in other words, two good paragraphs.

Friday
Test on vocabulary and content of Chapter 11 through Chapter 15 Section 1. Students took notes on the rest of Ch. 15 S3 (pp. 468-470) and then worked on the Communicating in Code w/s.

Homework Finish w/s, and do textbook p. 476 Review Questions 7 and 8 in complete sentences.



Thursday
Checked HW - p. 461 #3, a & b; Thinking Map of The Compromise of Missouri; p. 465 #2.
Read, discussed, and took notes on Ch. 15 Section 3 (The Crisis Deepens) through The Dred Scott Case.

Homework Study for quiz.
Test on vocab and content of Ch. 11-Ch. 15 S1 this Friday.



Wednesday
Finished reading, discussing, and taking notes on Ch. 15 S 1. Read, discussed, and took notes on Ch. 15 Section 2 (The Crisis Deepens).

Homework Textbook p. 465, #2. Vocab: p. 465, #1, the last four terms. Also, create a Cause and Effect Thinking Map on The Compromise of 1850.

Checked HW from Thurs. and Friday. Collected illustrations of Stories of Escape. Read, discussed, and took notes on Ch. 15 Section 1 (Growing Tensions between North and South) through The Wilmot Proviso (P3 only got through Antislavery and Racism).
