We had a bus evacuation drill to the Community Center this morning, so several classes were impacted.
I collected the Research Papers in P4 and P7.
P3 will turn them in on Monday.
P7 took the written portion of the DVSSA.

GeoBee is Monday at 1:20, so we won't have P7.

We reviewed for and took the final Standards test.
Students then worked through a sample primary source analysis. We reviewed and discussed the answers.

I will give extra points to students who budgeted their time and are able to turn in their research reports tomorrow. Students who turn the report in on Thursday will not have it count against them.

I showed an example of a bibliography and we discussed requirements.
As a class, we read Ch 21 S3 and S4 w/s and answered the questions.
Students then had time to work in their groups on their booth projects. Those whose booths did not get my approval will need to get it done asap.

Week of Nov. 29

Friday
Quarters for Caring Fair was introduced. We discussed the rubric and guidelines.

Students worked in groups to brainstorm activities for their booths.

Students had time to work on the outline and rough draft in class.

Students began work on their research paper. I showed examples of good and not-so-good reports and discussed expectations. Students worked on the outline in class.

Students took the mid-point 7th grade history standards test (not for a grade, but they will get some points if they get at least 60%).

Students were introduced to my expectations for completing Cornell Notes.
I gave each student a spiral-bound notebook (to be kept in class). We will use the notebooks for Cornell Notes. We formatted the notebook and then, as a class, worked together through the first part of Chapter 11 Section 1: Early Industry and Inventions, taking notes and discussing main ideas and supporting details.
Please note: Students will need to supply their own notebook when this one is full. It might be a good idea to purchase a notebook or two for the second semester now, while prices are still low at the beginning of the school year.

Students shared their reflections on the Learner Surveys and then turned them in.
Students then worked on the "Getting to know your textbook" assignment using the Creating America textbooks.

I checked which students needed to check out a textbook and which could use the online version - we went to the library and those who needed textbooks were able to check them out.
We took a Multiple Intelligences survey to discover what kind(s) of intelligences we have and then graphed the results. Students took notes on the traits of their top 2-3 intelligences and any careers that appealed to them. Many students had time to begin their homework.

Monday
I enjoyed meeting my new students! We discussed general rules and procedures. Due to the imminent schedule changes, I will review my syllabus and other forms next Monday. We reviewed the textbook situation and the possibility of accessing the electronic version from home.
We also took a Learner Survey to discover what kind of learner we are.
P4 and P7 took the "What are my learning strengths?" survey. P7 turned in the results of the Learning Strengths survey (intelligences).
Homework
Check that you can access the electronic textbook online. Otherwise, you'll need to check out a textbook from the school library for the year. You will be responsible for its return or replacement in May 2011. P4 needs to finish the "What are my learning strengths?" survey and list scores on the half-sheet they were given.

Supplies for my Social Studies Classes

Please note:
- No permanent markers (like Sharpies)
- No gel pens

To be as successful as possible, you should have the following items each day:

- 2 two-pocket folders
- lined, loose-leaf paper (keep a supply at home and replenish when needed)
- colored pencils; we do a lot of maps!
- one or two spare pencils (or extra lead for mechanical pencils)
- black pens for labeling maps (and writing, if you wish)
- red pens for grading
- a thumb/flash drive will be very helpful

Students engaged in a another simulation of trench warfare during WWI, this time going over the top. Part of the activity included finding the definitions of terms related to WWI trench warfare.

Early Release Day - Special Schedule



Tuesday
Students engaged in a simulation of trench warfare during WWI and had to decide, as a commander, which technologies (tanks, machine guns, Zeppelins, etc.) to implement when faced with four scenarios. For each mission, students wrote down (bullets) what worked, what did not work, what the outcome was, and what they learned (about fighting in the trenches with the technologies available to them).

Write a journal entry or letter as a soldier from a European country that is at war. Include 5 historical facts (highlighted) gleaned from the video and/or your WWI paperwork. At the top, say who you are and from what country. As we continue to cover WWI, this identity will change depending on what we are covering in class. Include the date. The entry should be 1/2 to 3/4 of a page in length.

In the computer lab, students tackled the intriguing question, "Was Germany to blame for WWI?" After working through the online simulation once, the did it again, this time filling in pertinent details about the history of the time.
