Week of Jan. 31

Friday
I checked Journal Entry #3.
Handout: Causes of WWI: Gap Fill Exercise (one page, 2 sides)
Students used the completed packet from yesterday along with the packet with the map of Europe 1914 on the front to fill in the worksheet.
Most students had time to begin Causes of WWI Crossword.
Homework
Finish the crossword for Monday.



Thursday
In the computer lab, students worked through a simulation of whether Germany was to blame for WWI.
Handout: Causes of WWI: Gap Fill Exercise (4 pages, stapled)
Students then went through the simulation again, this time filling in the blanks with the correct answers (found as they worked through the simulation).
Most students completed the packet and had time for the Age of Imperialism game.
Homework
If you did NOT finish the packet, be sure to have it done by tomorrow. You will need it for class.
I will check Journal Entry #3 (which was due today) tomorrow.




Wednesday
No school for students - staff development


Tuesday
I checked and we shared journal entries.
We read an article on the Schlieffen Plan, then watched two video segments on the beginning of the war and the invasion of Belgium by Germen troops [Strachan To Arms 34:44-end (50:00) and Under the Eagle 0:00-12:40]. Students took notes for use in journal entries.
Homework
Journal Entry #3.



Monday
I collected the newspapers.
We shared and I graded the journal entries.
Handout: Europe in 1914
We discussed the resources of the main countries that would take part in the war.
In small groups, students read about a particular country and then shared what they had learned with the rest of the class.

Week of Jan. 24

Friday
We read and discussed pp. 6-10 of The Causes of World War I packet (with the map in front): The Growing Crises and Four Steps to War. June - Aug. 1914
Handout: World War I - A to Z (study guide).
We highlighted the terms that will be on a future test.
Handout: Nicknames for soldiers during The Great War / German-French-British-Russian names for use in the journal entries.
Homework
Newspaper front page on the death of Franz Ferdinand due Monday.
Journal Entry #1, due Monday. See WWI Journal Entry Guidelines above the lessons for details.



Thursday
I checked the homework. Keep the crossword for a study guide.
We watched a couple of video segments about the lead-up to the assassination of Franz Ferdinand. Students took notes.
Homework
Using the assassination w/s from yesterday and your notes from today, produce a newspaper front page on the death of Franz Ferdinand. Your articles should give a detailed account of the assassination and the reasons for this action being taken by the Black Hand. Due Monday.
If you'd like to try something different, create your newspaper front page using Microsoft Publisher or letterPOP. If using letterPOP (which is free), please be aware of this part of the Terms and Conditions: "Users under 13 years of age are required to have a parent or guardian review and complete the registration process."



Wednesday
We went over the homework. I did not collect.
Handout: Assassination of Franz Ferdinand.
We read and discussed the handout. Most students had time to finish their homework.
Homework
Complete the crossword on the back and use as a study guide for upcoming tests.



Tuesday
We went over the homework questions before students turned them in.
Handout: The Causes of WWI packet (map of 1914 Europe on the front)
We read and discussed pp. 2-4.
Homework
Create a bubble map around the mnemonic ANIMAL. Each spoke should represent one of the letters (one of the causes) of WWI. Add 3 bullet points about each cause.
Keep EVERYTHING from now on that deals with WWI - consider everything a study guide, something you will need to know for a test.



Monday
I collected the homework.
We read and discussed the Long and Short Term Causes of WWI (handout).
Homework
On a separate sheet of paper, answer the six questions at the end of the handout. Use complete sentences, and skip a line between answers.

From now on, keep EVERYTHING dealing with World War I and the lead-up to it.

Week of Jan. 17

Friday
I collected the homework.
We worked on maps of Asia and Africa, coloring in the various colonies controlled by the major imperialist powers.
Homework
Finish the maps.



Thursday
I checked the homework (flashcards).
Students finished Cornell Notes on Ch 23 S3.
We then watched a segment from a History Channel video on TR's presidency and his part in the construction of the Panama Canal.
Homework
U.S. Overseas w/s - will need textbook and/or atlas to find some of the information. Due tomorrow.
Tomorrow is Map Day - if you have colored pencils, be sure to have them with you!



Wednesday
I collected notes and summaries from yesterday's video.
Students took Cornell Notes on Ch 23 S3. There will be time tomorrow to finish the section.
Homework
txtbk p. 674, Terms and Names - Using a blank sheet of paper, create flashcards with the term on one side and the definition on the other. Study the terms. You can use index cards if you prefer.



Tuesday
P7 was shortened due to the ACE Assembly.
Students watched and took notes on a segment from a History Channel video on the growth of cites in the U.S. around the end of the 19th century.
Homework
Paragraph summarizing what you saw in the video.

Week of Jan. 10

Friday
Modified schedule due to Honors Assembly.
I collected the homework.
We watched a segment from a History Channel video on TR's involvement in the Spanish-American War and his achievements in public life up to the assassination of McKinley. Students took notes (they were turned in).
Homework
None. Enjoy the long weekend!



Thursday
I collected the homework from Tuesday and Wednesday.
Students worked on categorizing facts about Puerto Rico (w/s 188) and completed w/s 186-187 (The Spanish-American War: Fighting on Land and Sea)

Wednesday
We read and discussed Ch 23 S2, finishing up the Spanish-American War. Students had time to work on their homework.
Homework
Lucy Stone questions are due tomorrow.

Tuesday
Students presented the Readers Theater on Lucy Stone.
We read and discussed Ch 23 S1 and the first red heading of Ch 23 S2.

Monday
I collected homework (from Thurs. and P7's Friday).
We read and discussed Ch. 22 S3 and handed out parts for the Readers Theater tomorrow.

Friday
Early Release - Special Schedula
Since we were in Homeroom all day, we were able to catch up on what we missed due to the Spelling Bee on Wednesday.
Homework
Period 7 only: summary of notes on the TR video


Thursday
P3 and 4 only - I collected the notes and summaries.
We read and discussed Ch 22 S2: Taft and Wilson as Progressives.
I showed a 7-min. video from the History Channel on the Taft presidency.
Homework
txtbk p. 649, #3 a & b in complete sentences.



Wednesday
I collected the Tree Maps.
Periods 3 and 4 watched and took notes on a History Channel video about Teddy Roosevelt (TR: An American Lion - to 50:48).
Period 7 went to the Spelling Bee.
Homework
Write a summary of your notes (P3 and 4 only).



Tuesday
As a class, we read, discussed, and finished Cornell Notes on Ch 22 Section 1. P7 will finish tomorrow before we go to the Spelling Bee.
Homework
txtbk. p. 643, #2. Instead of a chart, construct a tree map with the same information as shown in the chart. No need to answer the question under the chart.



Monday
Welcome back!
As a class, we read, discussed, and took Cornell Notes on Ch 22 Section 1 as far as the end of the Social Welfare paragraph.
Homework
Almanac Jan. 5: do a brace thinking map on Ellis Island, then a summary from the brace map info. Due tomorrow.
Extra enrichment: choose any one of the other events that occurred on Jan. 5. Research the event on your own time and write a good paragraph about it. Turn it in to the correct bin. Your paper must have the proper heading, the title of the page (e.g., Jan. 5, Ellis Island), and complete sentences. You will also be graded on conventions (spelling, etc.).
The extra enrichment will be due the following Monday, unless it's a holiday, when it will be due on the Tuesday.
