Friday
No School - Spring Break Day


Thursday
Read and discussed textbook p. 709 ff. (Ch 25 S1 - The Business of America).
Homework
Create a thinking map (brace or tree maps are most suited to this) with the headings Government, Business, Agriculture, and Technology using information from the section we just read.
Study for the test on Tuesday.
The Last Battalion permission slip due back by April 7 at the latest.




Wednesday
Checked The Legacy of WWI w/s and Journal Entry #13.
Went over what to review for Tuesday's test.
Used Pre- and Post-WWI maps of Europe and the Cost of War grid to determine how the face of Europe changed as a result of the war.
Homework
Study for the test on Tuesday.
The Last Battalion permission slip due back by April 7 at the latest.




Tuesday
Checked Life on the Home Front w/s and Journal Entry #12.
Watched segments from War Without End [Strachan - Disc 4 - 21:45-end], which covered the Treaty of Versailles and the attitude of The Big Four towards the defeated Germany.
Handout: The Legacy of World War I (w/s 237-238).
Homework
Read, complete chart and questions on The Legacy of World War I - in complete sentences - and learn the terms / names. No extra thinking map tonight.
Also, Journal Entry #13.
Permission Slip went home for The Last Battalion - due back by April 7 at the latest.
WWI test (covering lead-up to war, course of the war, and Treaty of Versailles) will be next Tuesday, April 6.

Watched segments from War Without End [Strachan - Disc 4 up to 21:45] on what led up to the Armistice.

Special schedule due to the half day. Students attended periods 8, 4, and 7 today.

Watched segments from Germany's Last Gamble [Strachan - Disc 4] concerning the state of affairs in Germany and Austria-Hungary in 1918.
Handout: Theatres of War. Students used information from the front of the sheet to complete the chart on the back.

Journal Entry #11 and Theatres of War chart. Both are due Monday.

Wednesday
Students took Cornell Notes on Ch24 S2. After taking notes, generate a question for each capital letter (questions go in the left margin) and create one mini thinking map (of your choice) for any one of the capital letters (the mini thinking map goes on the right). Finally, do a summary of your notes at the end.
Homework
Finish the summary.
WWI test will be during the week of April 5.



Tuesday
Checked Journal Entry #9.
Watched History Channel video on the correspondence between soldiers and their families, from the American perspective [Dear Home: Soldiers and the Home Front].
Homework
Journal Entry #10. Be sure to incorporate information from the videos and handouts.



Monday
Checked Journal Entry #8 from before the Break.
Read about the food available to soldiers while they were engaged in trench warfare and learned more about the concept of total war as it related to the Great War (two handouts). A third handout depicted the regulation equipment of a WWI soldier.

Watched video on the revolutions and resistance to the war in Russia, Britain, Ireland, and Italy - [Strachan Disc 3 - Revolution].
Homework
Journal Entry #8. Be sure to incorporate information from the videos we've been watching.



Wednesday
Checked Journal Entry #6.
Watched video on important events in naval warfare - [WWI in color - Killers on the Sea]. Note Gallipoli, Battle of Jutland, sinking of the Lusitania.
Homework
Journal Entry #7. Be sure to incorporate what we've seen in the video.



Tuesday
Checked Journal Entry #5.
Watched video on new WWI technologies on the sea and in the air [WWI in color - Blood in the Air].
Homework
Journal Entry #6. Be sure to incorporate what we've been learning about in the videos. If you're absent, you can do some quick research online and/or use any of your previous notes/worksheets/packets.

Week of March 1

Friday
Checked Journal Entry #4 and any remaining simulation w/s from yesterday.
Read and discussed two w/s: Life in the Trenches and Waterlogged Trenches.
Homework
No journal entry tonight. Just answer questions 1, 2, and 3 from the Life in the Trenches w/s. Write complete sentences for #2 and #3. Use the larger diagrams on the last two pages to help answer the questions.



Thursday
Students engaged in a another simulation of trench warfare during WWI, this time going over the top. Part of the activity included finding the definitions of terms related to WWI trench warfare.
Homework
Journal Entry #4. Include information learned from today's simulation.



Wednesday
Early Release Day - Special Schedule



Tuesday
Students engaged in a simulation of trench warfare during WWI and had to decide, as a commander, which technologies (tanks, machine guns, Zeppelins, etc.) to implement when faced with four scenarios. For each mission, students wrote down (bullets) what worked, what did not work, what the outcome was, and what they learned (about fighting in the trenches with the technologies available to them).
Homework
Journal Entry #3. Include information learned from the simulation in the trenches.



Monday
Checked Journal Entry #1 and blue w/s (Dates and Events).
Handout with names from Germany, France, Britain, and Russia, which can be used in the journal entries.
Watched brief video covering European countries mobilizing (Strachan ~ 0-32:47 from Under the Eagle).
Homework
Journal Entry #2. Write a journal entry or letter as a soldier from a European country that is at war. See journal entry guidelines at the top of this post. The entry should be 1/2 to 3/4 of a page in length.
