Week of Oct. 25

Friday
Early Release - Special Schedule
We listened to a recording by Jeff Daniels of The Gettysburg Address.
Students then worked in pairs on a worksheet that took a closer look at the speech.

I will check Journal Entry #13 on Monday.

Thursday
I checked HW.
Students completed w/s while watching the short History Channel documentary, Civil War - the Story. We went over the answers. This w/s is one part of the study guides students will receive for the upcoming test.
Students also worked on Workbook Activity 16, which is also part of the study guide for the test. We reviewed this w/s as well.

Wednesday
I checked Journal Entry #12.
Students read and took notes on the Chapter 17 S3 as far as (including) Vicksburg. We did not do Sherman's Total War (as that was in 1864). Homework

Students watched and took notes on the History Channel video: Secret Soldiers of the Civil War.

Students drew casualty cards to incorporate into their journal entries.
We sang "Goober Peas" to boost morale, and then engaged in combat.

Week of Oct. 18

Friday
Early Release - Abbreviated Schedule
I checked Journal Entry #9.
Each student completed the Social Studies Quarterly Personal Evaluation ad Goals w/s.
Students finished Cornell Notes on Chapter 17 Section 2. Some had time to formulate questions (for each capital letter) and complete the summary.

Early Release - No Social Studies - Special Schedule: Period 1, then HR until dismissal.


Wednesday
I checked Journal Entry #8.
Students watched and took notes on the History Channel video: The 54th Massachusetts.

Students began Cornell Notes on Chapter 17 Section 2. We will have more time to finish on Friday.
We watched a performance by students of the 1863 Interview. Students took notes.

Students completed Cornell Notes on Chapter 17 Section 1: The Emancipation Proclamation.

Week of Oct. 11

Friday
We found out why more soldiers died of disease than of wounds, then watched the History Channel segment on "Living Like a Civil War Soldier."
Students completed the Beat the Odds w/s using their judgement based on what they had read and seen.

Thursday
I checked the HW.
We graded the European Reaction to Southern Secession quiz.
Students finished Cornell Notes on Chapter 16 Section 3, went back and developed questions for each capital letter, wrote summaries of their notes, and began to fill in the Table of Contents.
Again, remember that information from this chapter can also be used for journal entries and for filling in the Camp Life and Civil War Battles w/s.

As a class, we read What Did Civil War Soldiers Eat (own copy)?
Students completed the Soldier Talk and Civil War Slang crossword (use words from the w/s in future journal entries).

Week of Oct. 4

NOTE: As "Extra Enrichment" I will accept 3 consequences for the North and South, patterned after the Destiny Dice consequences. They have to be historically accurate and possible. Try to include a mixture of both positive and negative consequences. This is totally optional. You do not have to do it. If you do, I need them by Tuesday.


Friday

As a class, we read Why Did They Fight? Students took notes for their journal entry.
Students presented the 1861 Interview and the audience took notes for their journal entry.
